I think a few of the answers have the ALDS (the Divisional Series with all four teams) confused with the ALCS (the final round before the World Series).
I can see this happening. The Tigers have the pitching to stop anyone in a series. The Yankees have Wang, Johnson (inconsistent), Mussina (hurt again) Jared Wright & Liddle. This rotation should not scare anyone but Yankee fans. If Rivera is injured for any length of time that is another concern.
The Tigers have been going through a rough 5 weeks, but their lead is still 4 games as of September 9. They are holding off the White Sox and the Twins and they are much tougher competition than anyone the Yankees have chasing them.
It is quite possible it can be the A's vs Tigers in the ALCS,.

If the current winning percentages happen the only way the A's will face the Tigers is if they both win the first round of the playoffs. If the season ended today the Tigers would play the Twins (wildcard team by half a game over the Whitesox) and the Yankees would play the A's.
It is a real possibilty though that the Tigers will be the wild card team which would leave them facing the Yankees or the Twins/Whitesox depending on who had the best record. The Tigers have been fading the last couple months while the Twins have come on strong and the Whitesox who've been in striking distance all season have slowly caught up. Today 4 games seperate them. With 20 games left to play that's not much of an edge. A hot streak by the Tigers or Twins, especially if they sweep the Tigers in the next week or two and the Tigers could wind up out of the playoffs completely. If the Tigers get hot the only way they'll face the A's is if the A's wind up being the wild card team.
The Angels are 5.5 games back as of today. So it's possible. Hot streak by the Angels, and the Twins, Whitesox and get cold the A's could step backwards into the wildcard. Boston and Toronto could not get hot either. Detroit would have too.
The Yankees are A's killers. Even in years when the A's had the better team the Yanks have a way of bringing them down. So I wouldn't count on the A's getting past the Yanks. Especially not this year when the Yanks are a much better team.
Detroit against Minnesota or Chicago will be interesting. Very interesting. Far from an easy sweep for either team.
If I had to make a prediction at this time I think the Yanks will face the wildcard which will probably come from the AL Central. (Tigers, Twins or Whitesox). The Yanks will win, the AL Central winner (if it's the Twins or Whitesox but not Detroit) will beat the AL West. I think the A's or Angels will sneak up on the Tigers if they win the AL Central. The ALCS will then be won by the Yanks over the AL Central winner in a close series unless the Tigers win the AL Central and have 2nd best record. Then it will be against the A's or Angels. Against the A's the Yanks will walk. The Angels however have a history of beating the Yanks and it would be a really close series I think. I think the Twins and the Whitesox will play tough against the Yanks as well.
So the odds of the A's and Tigers facing each other is pretty slim.

If the Yankees have a better record at the end the season than the Tigers and the Tigers end up winning their division, it will be the As vs the Tigers in the ALCS series. The Yankees would play the wild card team (Twins or White Sox) in the ALCS series. If the Tigers slump continues and the Yankees end up with a better record than the Tigers, it could end up the way your dad thinks. If the season was over right now, it would be the Tigers vs the Twins in the ALCS and the Yankees vs the As.

The only possible way that match-up could happen is if the A's pull out the best record in baseball and play the wild card in the Divisional Series.
If the Tigers have the best record, they can't play a central team, and would end up playing Oakland (because the Yankees would have the better record).
If the Yankees have the best record, they end up playing the Wild Card and the Tigers play the Athletics in the Divisional Series.
This is ignoring the odds that both teams advance even if they don't play each other in the first round.
Don't count on Oakland AND Detroit in the A.L.C.S.

As it stands now, The Tigers would play The A's in the divisional series---not the league series.
Either way The Tigers will clobber The A's.
