I have seen related questions, jokes etc. on this topic. Is it truly written in the Old testament or is just another Urban Myth?

Yes, it is in the Old Testament and point-of-fact is the second story of Creation. The first basically states that God created the man and the woman from the "clay" of the Earth (some Bible scholars translate 'clay' as "slime of the Earth").

The second story relates how God caused a deep sleep to come over Adam and He removed one of his ribs to fashion the woman. I am sure it is metaphorical.

Yes, it's written in the Bible, Genesis 2:21: So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh.
