If you look at the case of Iran historically you'll find another blunder committed by US for short-term gains. US deposed the popularly elected leader of Iran, Dr. Musadik, in 1953 because he nationalized the British oil company there, and installed Raza Shah as the king of Iran. Raza Shah was a despot who caused to much death and torture. There was a popular resentment against his heavy-handed rule. So in 1979 people rose up aginst his government and clerics took the opportunity of establishing a theocracy.
