Superficially its because of lesser demand after labor day and speculation over a recent oil discovery in the Gulf. In reality, its probably due to posturing on the part of oil companies to reduce the price at the pump prior to the mid-term elections. Remember, big oil did not make the kind of profits we see today until Bush and the Reps took control of Government. Now that control of Government by the Right Wing is in jeopardy, due partly to the severe economic situation the middle class is suffering because of inept Bush domestic leadership, Oil sees that reducing the price of gas may make voters "go to sleep" and permit the Republicans to continue in power. Big oil fears Democrats, who would likely seek hard answes to the price gouging in the past six years, and who may impose injunctive relief, such as price controls. Its all supply and demand and, like your local corner drug dealer, oil companies fix prices based upon the maximum amount they can squeeze out of people.

They are dropping because the election is coming up in a few months and all of the politicians want to be able to take credit for it. Prices will return to the insane when the election is over.

They are dropping because of the elections. Bush hopes that this will cause more people to vote Republican. After the elections they will rise again.
Bush wants the price to be at least 5 bucks a gallon before he retires. It would be a real treat for the American public to see his "blind trust".

Lower gas prices help Republicans and the Bush administration. Who do you think oil companies want in office, Repubs that give them tax breaks and kiss thier buttocks or Dems that might hold them accountable? They will go back up after the election.

They are reported to be in a continual drop until they are around $2.00 a gallon again around election time.
Which brings the question, why can the prices only drop around election time?
