It has to due with composition and behavior. Pluto has the same composition as thousands of other similar objects past it.(ice and rock) It also has a moon, Charon, that is almost the same size. The gravitational pull on each other causes them to practically form a double planet, revolving around each other.Scientists think Pluto and Charon formed when Pluto collided with a similar sized planet and the debris recombined to form 2 separate bodies.

It is because of the discovery of another planetoid larger than pluto. Pluto is smaller in size compared to the earth's moon and can not be considered a planet.

Because pluto is smaller than one of its moons.
Because it does not have a regular orbit around the sun.
Because it drifts around too much - sometimes becoming the 8th plante fron the sun (due to orbiting).
Because there have been other objects found in sapce larger than pluto.
Because pluto doesn't have a comletely spherical shape.
it is not heavy enough to have a pull of gravity to make it into a round object.
Because if it were a planet, then the definition of planets would alow there to be more than dozens added due to new discoveries.

Other cosmic objects the same size as pluto have been identified. Either they all become planets, or Pluto becomes a planetoid.
