Get Yahoo Widgets - it has a lot of cool desktop tools, including a calendar, clocks, stock ticker - lots of useful tools.

As Google calendar is a web application, that's what it'll have to stay. You could have the shortcut to the page on your desktop or even apply this shortcut to a keyboard key. The address below is for the direct link to Google calendar. Just make a shortcut to this url on your desktop and setup so it remembers your log in details.
