I asked a question about black culture, honestly only wanting to understand better, and the response looked something like this:

"OMG you are such an ignorant arrogant racist hayseed a$$hole!"

Since I'm obviously too ignorant to even form a question about parts of black culture, let's work on that! :) Hopefully these questions are so basic that none of my stink... I mean ignorance will matter.

What are the top stereotypes that white people have of blacks?

What do white people need to know most about blacks in general?

What are the biggest problems that blacks face as a culture?

Do you think that white people, in general, hate black people?

Also, if you could take a white guy like me anywhere you wanted for a whole day to teach him about black culture, what places would you take him?

Thanks for the good responses so far.

No offense taken wombatusium, glad you took none. As I said though I was informed that blacks in the US prefer that over "African American". Different from your situation I guess.

RunningMan, I think you should elaborate. If you're going to accuse me at least explain it.

You mean, all that typing I did on your behalf and THAT is your summary? Ghheeeesh. I hope you appreciate THIS response a little more. Look for the POSITIVE, not the negative, you got some GOOD answers! Maybe not what YOU wanted, but others' honest feelings.

1. White people think blacks are unhappy being blacks, that they are poor, uneducated and immoral. Sad and mostly untrue.

2. White people need to KNOW that blacks and whites are essentially the same, nurture, environment and priviledges or the lack thereof make us see and experience things differently.

3. The biggest problems blacks face as a culture is lack of self awareness. If more blacks had "knowledge of self" then life in general would be better for each individual.

4. No, white people in general don't hate blacks. I know a lot of white people who love blacks "in general" and I have a hundred white friends who love ME to death. There is racism, of course, but there is also a lot of love between the races.

Okay. Hope THAT helped and that you'll look at the sensible answers, not just the ones with lots of innuendo and exclamation points. God bless you.

To answer your details... I've already invited you to my home in Cleveland. Go to a black church a few weeks in a row. Go to a black record store. Go to a jazz concert.. there are a myriad of places you could go.

Maybe its the fact that you used the term "black" culture. "Black" is not a culture, its a colour. If you want to know more about a particular culture then maybe you should refer to the actual cultral name not the colour. Having said that, your not arrogant but maybe need to learn abit more about cultures before you ask a question. Good luck mate.

Well mate, African American would have been the correct term, and we do know abit about American culture here in Australia as we learn about most countries in school over here and I completed my international sociology degree last year as well as having an American friend over here, no offense.

If we call Aboriginals (our indigenous people who are also of black appearance) "black" over here we get critisised. We have African people here to, so if we were refering to the black culture we would be refering to the Africans and the Aboriginals which of course are two different cultures and have different beliefs and practices.

I'm sorry if you took offence, but in a world obsessed with poiltical correctness people are always going to have an opinion different to yours. But good luck in your understanding and I wish you all the best. It would have been nice if you had an email address I could have sent this response to you.

I would say the top stereotypes that whites have of blacks are: they are all rappers, they are all gang bangers, they all like chicken, they are all unmarried, that black men are criminals.

I think that white people need to know that blacks still encounter racism at job interviews, by the police, at federal and state agencies, and that they still struggle for equal rights and treatment almost daily.

The biggest problem that blacks face as a culture is that a lot of their men are in prison, many innocent, too. The prison population of blacks is very high, probably because they couldn't afford good representation at their court hearing. This affects the homefront, their children, girlfriend or wife, and their elderly parents.

I think there are a select bunch of whites that hate blacks, but it is a low percentage. I think the majority of whites like blacks, but may unknowingly discriminate or still not understand black culture.

let's see if this helps you out:
1. i'm not white, so I can't answer that one (or did you mean what do blacks PERCIEVE as being the top stereotypes that white people have of them?)
2. the one's that still are not aware that we (humans, regardless if we are black, white, or ~which is the true majority~ a mixture of races) are all equal and there is no "supreme race". Mature your minds.
3. my point of view is having to deal with racists, bigots and self-hating blacks, stereotypes, racial profiling, etc. Just B.S. in general from those that pre judge / stereotype you off the cuff.
4. not so much as HATE (such a strong conotation), as much as fear. In a day and age where more than just the caucasian race are able to achieve higher education and entrepenuership, they are threatened (plain and simple).
5. I would honestly bring them to a family reunion (complete with church service, heritage / scrapbooking, picnic afterwards, the works) to see what TRUE family is about. We are closer knit than most ethnic groups in my opinion.

What do you find so intersesting about "black" peoples lives? There just like mine and yours, no different. News Flash: if you want to know about black people look in the mirror, they are exactly the same as you,, all that's different is maybe some style, and of course, they don't look similsr to you because they are a different nat., What do you find so fascinating about african americans and not about asian americans (yellow people?) or italian americans (red people?) lol. what is wrong with you. thetre no different, and your questions are libalous to all people of some other nat.

Why do all Americans keep asking these stupid questions about black people, it's only skin colour that is different, leave them alone. I don't think things about black people, they are our fellow human beings, white people should be ashamed they way they treat other cultures.
