Not sure, but here in the Netherlands taxes on cars that drive on diesel are higher than on cars that drive on petrol. So here at least driving diesel only makes sense when driving a lot.

the government has put so much tax on it for their own coffers.
deisel was the alternative to petrol as it could be produced cheaper but now the government has put so much tax on it that it is more expensive.
we are one of the highest taxed countrys in the world on verualy every product there is and also income tax

good point though the other day walking along the canel I walked past a narrow boat that had a sign up saying diesel for 51p a litre was tempted to buy a diesel car and walk along the canl with a 20litre jerry can every time I need it.

There is more tax on diesel to encourage people to buy unleaded. But I dont think there is a great difference.
