I'm a huge fan of The Body Shop, partly because I do love all the stuff that smells so that you actually want to taste it, but I also think they're doing a great job in supporting community trade, and all their other idealistic goals. Well, pretty much everyone nowadays has the "not tested on animals" thing, but they also consider the ideas like women's body image, human rights, environment, etc. Do you think it is all a hoax to make people like me buy more of their stuff, or are they seriously concerned with those issues?

All marketting nonsense. Against Animal Testing is not the same as We Do Not Test On Animals.

Their photos are as airbrushed as everyone elses and they treat their staff terribly (I have a friend who managed a couple of shops, they forced her into a breakdown).

If you want truly ethical but still 'fun', go to Lush.

i don't for a minute think that it started purely as a marketing campaign. If Anita Roddick had just wanted money, there are easier ways. Now it's a big corporation and whatever her ethics might be it will have drifted to brand-centric and accountant-driven. Doesn't mean they don't still do good stuff.

Russian proverb: the perfect is the enemy of the good. I have no doubt that the Body Shop is not perfect. I'm still prepared to believe that it is good.

They all just marketing campaign some of 'em work really but only for a day or just few hours. Those are the chemical treatment on your skin so you can feel littlebit good when you use it for the first time but after sometime you will not find any extra ordinary effect. People are so dumb that they used to spend unbelievable amount of money towards this kind of products.

I' t has changed tremendously since Anita Roddick first started in Brighton !
I used to take my bottles back to be refilled with all those wonderful natural treatments ! After that most of the shops became franchised and changed through that .
Now that the takeover by L'oreal happened I get very sad when I pass those shops , somehow the original idea has totally disappeared

Whenn I buy there products I don't believe I am helping other people or the environment. I think there one of those companies that say they give to charity but its like 5p in the pound you spend. I dont know actually I have never read the investors reports etc.

Probably a bit of both (marketing & ethics)plus some decent products. It would be great if some other Companies tried similar attitudes.

Not all brands do not test on animals. And the Body Shop doesn't just not test on animals, on their products it says "AGAINST Animal Testing". I think it's for real, they can't really lie about it, can they? If they got caught then that'll be really bad for them. Don't think they'd risk it.

i think they have to be serious, because if they ever got caught they would be in a heap of trouble, and it would be all over news as bad publicity and they would lose a lot more than money.

i love the body shop, i wear vanilla oil and it smells great and the guys love it...LOL

No. I just studied them in my ethics class. Anita Roddick stepped down so that she could focus on the philanthropic stuff and let professionals run the business.

The products are not quite the same since Burke and Hare left their employment.
