I'm just wondering because I taught myself how to dance some of the Latin dances through watching dance movies and feeling the flow of the music.

You mean, dancing Latin with a partner? Like cha-cha and Rumba?
Yes, it is possible to enter the competitions. There are different levels of difficulty/proficiency, you should start with the lowest one - that would be the easiest to win. However, it may be difficult to win them if you didn't have any feedback from a teacher. It is also possible to get disqualified in the competition if you do the steps that are too advanced for the level you entered. (There are rules and restrictions on steps and dance figures, you see.) But, unlike in the movies, if you're disqualified nobody's making a big deal out of it. They just give you the last place, that's all. Check for local amateur competitions here: http://www.usabda.org The simplest level to enter and dance is Newcomer. Competitve dancing is a lot of fun. Go for it!

If you are talking about entering competitions, you should know that there are very strict rules about the footwork. Some steps are compulsory, others are optional. Some competitions allow improvisation and others don't. It just depends on the judges. But most Latin dancing is done with a partner, and you enter as a team, so you would have to train with your partner prior to the competition.
Why not watch a few real-life competitions (they aren't quite the same as what you see in the movies) and see exactly what goes on?
Good luck to you.

Wow, Snowflakes up at two in the morning, answering questions again :D

It's a good answer, better than mine.

I was going to say yes it's possible, but it might not be the most effecient way to go about it, since there are often entrance fees and rules to be followed. You can certainly do what you want, and you'll have fun participating.
