I'm a communication major, emphasis Public Relations. I'm now a senior; however, during my freshman year of college I was primarilly focused on Journalism. Journalism requires attention to detail, strict deadlines, excellent writing skills.. etc. My reasoning for deciding to focus on P.R. was due to the stressful nature of Journalism and also, P.R. specialists (for a lack of better words) tend to make A LOT more money in comparison to journalists. Another idea to consider about journalism is that journalists are typically required to work random, odd hours. I'm not saying that studying Journalism would be the worst thing in the world, hey we do need some decent and honest journalists, however, it's best to explore all avenues. I would recommend talking with current journalists and see if your idea of journalism coincides with the reality of the day to day grind.
Overall, I have a lot of respect for journalists, but can't see myself doing that job and being able to afford my student loans.

If communication is what you enjoy, by all means try it, but just be warned that people will laugh at you. Communication and Liberal Studies majors are usually regarded as the lazy majors that all sorority girls pick.

do you like it? is it what interests you? do you think you have what it takes (badgering for interviews, starting small, lots of competition, talent for writing an engaging piece)? if you do then you should definitely go for it, you don't want to wake up in ten years and hate your life wishing you took a different path.

journalism is a very, very tough field to break into.

There is something to be said about studying something you enjoy, but there is also something to be said about working in a field that is in demand.

Best of luck to you in whatever you choose!!
