every time i punch in a letter to start a search all the previous words starting with that letter come up?

go into tools, internet options, advanced.. restore defaults...

go to internet options and switch off Autocomplete feature in options tab

it's called auto complete, turn it off in control panel > internet options

If you are not happy, you can switch it off in the options menu.
