Depends on where in the world you are. In industrialized countries contribution of population growth to the economic growth is less that that of productivity. In the U.S., for example, real GDP grows by about 2.5% a year on average; population accounts for about 1%, productivity, for about 1.5%. In Germany and Japan, economies grow in spite of slowly shrinking population...

No it is about taking customers from competing businessess like their own. e.g. wal-mart taking customers from costco.
