Every team has one or more players they plan to use in such dire circumstances. It is usually the punter (most punters were QBs in their youth) or a player who was a quarterback in college or high school. Any active player may take the position of QB, but if he wears an ineligible number (50-79 or 90-99) he must report to the officials before he takes the position.

All teams have an emergency QB in case the ones in front of them go down. Back in the 70s, Dallas had WR Drew Pearson as their emergency 4th QB, and he even took a snap in the NFC Title game in 1982. It was the last play of the game and it was only to take a knee and let the clock run out. Cowboys FS Charlie Waters was also listed as an emergency QB for a game.

Others have included:
Troy Brown WR NE Patriots took two snaps against the Giants this preseason and handed off both times, Chargers third-string tight end Nate Lawrie, Denver WR Rod Smith, Redskins RB/KR Brian Mitchell who played in a Monday night game against the Eagles in 1990, and Steelers WR Antoine Randel El.

Obviously teams want a QB who understands the passing game, so WR is the obviuos choice. As previously mentioned, many WR's have had experience at QB in HS and college.

It's not really set in stone. I remember years ago Oakland Raiders punter George Blanda was an emergancy QB and running back Paul Hornug was the emergancy QB for the Green Bay Packers. If I remember correctly Hornug was also the emergancy kicker.

That is not true. A large number of teams have one of their wr's as an emergency back. The reason for this is because gifted athletes that played quarterback in the college ranks are not equipted to play qb in the NFL. But they are great athletes so they are usually turned into a wr, depending on their size and speed. The emergency quarterback is always a player who has played the posistion in college or highschool.

It rather relies upon on the coach and his very final decision. some communities use a 4th QB as a multi-objective participant who can return kicks, besides, like Antwan Randle El. Pittsburgh might have 4 QBs on their roster, yet this is as a results of the fact Roethlisberger is suspended for the 1st month of the season. no remember if or no longer they keep 4 after he comes back is a good sized question mark. different communities might keep 4 QB's, yet no longer all would be energetic on Sunday. this is to guard against injury to a minimum of certainly one of the different QB's or achieveable to handle a suspension. Or, between the gamers may be a rookie. working example, Denver might keep 4 QB's, yet which would be with the aid of fact Tebow is a indexed as a QB, yet will additionally play WR, besides as probably returning punts, too. It relies upon on a collection's needs and how stable the gamers that are competing for the jobs would be playing.

Actually a WR can line up as a QB, they just have to be declared eligable to the Refs I believe. I know they can line up as QB though. It's been done in gadgets plays. Like the Steelers did back when Stewert was the QB and one time lined up as RB and a WR lined up as the QB. Now they direct snapped to Stewert.
