Technical writing involves taking complex (yes, usually technical, hence the name) subjects and breaking them down into approaches the layperson can use.
The "classic" technical writing project is taking a piece of software and writing a manual on how to use it. This would then be included with all copies of the program.
But technical writing can be used in many environments. Anything that says "some assembly required" has a document written by a technical writer included. If you buy a chair that needs to be put together, a technical writer wrote the instructions.
Technical writers in the U.S. make between $25 to $35 dollars an hour as freelancers. They either interview the programmers or engineers and then write the explanatory piece or, more commonly, take the technical explanations that the engineers have written and rewrite it for a lay audience. They usually work on site, but some have the luxury of working from home.
