Can't better the hitchhiking idea for creativity, but alternatively, I'd suggest the following:
1. Walk to Stratford, or catch a bus if you prefer (80p if off-peak and you have an Oyster pre-pay card)
2. Catch the National Express coach, costs £8 for an adult single.
Am assuming BTW that you mean Plaistow in London, not the one in West Sussex... ;-)

Hammersmith & City Underground to Liverpool Street then Terravision Coach to Stansted £6.70 single (£11.80 Return)

Catch the tube to Liverpool Street and then get on the overground train to Stansted.

i think there is a new passaneger service in london
it is called Budget they pick you up from your house and drop at the airport just for a fiver
you can google it or yell.com
a friend of mine used this service recently
i think it is a good idea
