A "MANSION" would be in the 5000 to 8000 Sq Ft for starters!
Yes, to some people a house that is 2000 sq ft may seem like a mansion. But the acurate term, MANSION is in the sq ft'age and is a very high valued lot!
ps this house is 7489 sq ft....http://www.theplancollection.com/tps/homeplans/displayHousePlan.asp?ID=0&BID=1&PPP=20&SQ=512&ST=4194304&IID=8339&TID=23&MTID=217
This house has 5269 sq ft total living space and it looks HUGE

Is it stately?
Is it suffice to host the governor and a ball?
Can it accommodate the entourage that follow?
If you answered yes to all , then in olden days, it IS a mansion.
In modern times, there is no strict definition of how many rooms a house has to have before it can be termed a mansion, but realtors generally use the classification for houses with at least 8,000 square feet of floorspace.

A mansion to me is any place with more than 5000 sq ft; more bathrooms then bedrooms (I love seeing 6 bedroom, 8 baths) and a yard big enough that I feel good letting my dogs have fun there! Oh and if it has "maids quarters? Definitely mansion)

In my book, a mansion must be big enough to warrant servants. An estate is something built on land large enough to be serviced by a full-time gardener.

Depends on where you live. My neighborhood, the homes average 3800 s.f. so if you were here, no 3000 s.f. is not big. Also depends on how many people are living there. For one, 3000 s.f. would probably be big, but for a family of 5, it would be average.
