There was what would be called an today an economic slowdown in the French economy. This in itself is not usually the cause for rebellion and revolution, and in the case of 18th century France it was not either. The rebellion came because this economic slowdown occurred after a long period of growth and expectation of social advancement. It had been possible to buy into the nobility with money, and so the middle class had a way of entering the upper class. the hereditary nobility (nobility of the robe) was still seen as superior, but it was an outlet. This avenue was discontinued. As a result the falling economic standard was accompanied by a falling expectation - it would no longer be possible to advance socially; life in the future would not be as good or better than life in the present or past. This is really the most potent ingredient to cause revolt. This is as true now as it was then. This great dissatisfaction eventually led to the first phase of the French Revolution, the Girondins, who were "bourgeois." It was a middle class phenomenon which was only joined by the lower classes in the later phases of the revolution.
