if they use hot water it should be fine, even cold water unless they are licking the bowl clean aswell then cold water won't get rid of any germs they are carrying,in the world today people are being to fussy about everything being clean,it gets worse everyday and if it keeps up no-one will have an immune system left to fight off the smallest forms of bacteria.

As long as the water is hot and you brush off all the contamination the combination of the water and the chlorine that it contains, from the water works, will keep it germ free.
Also let the plates etc air dry and do not dry with a cloth as these drying up or tea cloths as they are called, produce and leave more germs and bacteria than any tiny amount left after washing.
Detergent traces left on the plates get into your body when next used and you do not know what harm this chemical can do to you.
Also think that if you cut a finger you are advised to rinse it under a running tap for a few minutes to clean and wash away dirt and germs. Water is best.

My humble opinion:
If the cereal has just been eaten, or say within a couple of hours, hot water should be okay. I would not be afraid to wash it with hot water and eat out of it personally.
If the milk dries on the bowl...and isnt washed well, then maybe there may be some germs or something.
By the way, you have been doing it and you haven'tt had anything happen yet so???? Its ok.
In general though I think dish soap is a good idea.

Water with detergent just gets faster results, the detergent (excluding anti bacterial detergent) does not kill germs just breaks the surface tension of the water and breaks up grease. So I guess a quick rinse immediately after eating cerial would be ok, but if its all dried in gunk youll have to soak it for a long time.
Most people just buy detergent and dont worry.

When I did the basic Health and Hygiene course a few years back, I found out that you can not stand water hot enough to kill all microbes which is why washing up liquid should be used as well.
That having been said, I think we ingest so many germs and microbes in other ways that a rinsed out bowl is not a crime!

Personally I wouldn't like it....whether or not it gets clean is irrelevant... people should respect the feelings of others in the house.
keep to your own bowls it's the only solution

I say if it's his own bowl, and you don't use it, why let it worry you. As long as he keeps it separate, I don't see a problem. If it bothers you so much, just wash it when you do your own.If this is your only problem you have, you are truly lucky.

The detergnet will get rid of grease and fat.
Since milk contains fat, water alone will not be enough

Yes, that is dirty because water doesn't kill the germs.
