use children to produce our expensive stuff...

I don't, and not because I'm poor. Most people do because the ability to separate ourselves from unpleasantness is a defining characteristic of the human species. Face it, if we really dealt with the amount of agony and despair in the world, if we dwelt upon the fact that every day people are tortured to death, children are raped, and thousands starved to death, it would make it pretty hard to enjoy Seinfeld.
Me, I don't even shop at WalMart. Many members of my family fought and died to free the slaves during the Civil War, shopping at WalMart would be akin to spitting on that legacy. Face it, shopping at WalMart is a step away from owning your own slave.
But to your question, why do people buy this stuff? Because we have so much wealth in this nation that we can no longer understand the important things in life, so we search for meaning else where. Lucky for middle America Madison Avenue and Wall Street are always willing to sell you the next lie to get your buck.

You are, for the most part, correct. I have no answer other then to say that the name brand (like Nike) is powerful and fits a person comfortably into his/her crowd of peers.

I buy the cheap shoes which are just as bad. The Payless shoes are made by cheap labor over seas and possibly with underage children. But what can I do? I'm not going around barefoot.

Yours is a good question, though.

To be honest, I still believe that the qualtity of a brand product is better than those fake ones, I used to play volleyball without Adidas shoes and I kept spraining my ankle, and since two years now that I use my Adidas shoes it never happened again, they give a better protection.

Still I believe that we need to stand up and react against the horrible conditions in which these children need to work.

I don't buy the expensive brands. Not because I care, I'm just poor.

Well... give me a list of the brand names that do this and I'll stop buying from them.

This is a very good question. I think the best answer to this is that we are not sure that they do. At least this is what we convince ourselves to go ahead and shop in a guilt-free manner.
