Steve died of a stingray barb to the chest. And the poison just spread very rapidly into his system causing a massive attack that paramedics weren't able to revived him no matter how hard they tried. The death was quick and Steve did not suffer if that's any consolation.

The exceptional life Steve led is a testament to his respect for all creatures great and small, and his passion for wildlife was matched only by his passion for family life.

Steve was stabbed through the chest by a Stingray's barb just off the coast of Cairns. There is currently much debate over wether the footage of this should be broadcast or not.

Steve's dad is very much alive...Bob Irwin.. he has appeared in media broadcasts about steve's death...steve's mum was killed in a car accident ... some years ago
