A lot has been said about pacifiers but did you know that they have been proven to reduce the risk of SIDS by over 70%? That is a HUGE difference. My kids all used them and they have no ill effects now. No crooked teeth or anything like that. Also, sucking on something soothes your baby too. It helps them to learn to self-soothe, which they NEED to learn. I just wonder why anyone would not want their child to have something that could save his or her life?

You can check with the Back To Sleep foundation if you'd like and to all the people who advocate thumb sucking... you can take a pacifier away. You can't take a thumb away. There are plenty of adults who still suck their thumb. I have a friend who gave her children a pacifier because of this very reason: she still sucks her thumb and she's 26 years old. It's just a habit she never got out of. I have known others as well. My mom knew a lady at her work who did it and this woman was like 40 years old.

I personally didn't make that claim. You can check with the Back To Sleep Foundation, as I have already said. But if you are a Nanny, I suppose you should already know. If not, you wouldn't be watching MY kids.

I have found another study that lists the percentage at 90. You can check it out here. Or put it in the yahoo search engine criteria.

I was not going to give my baby one - I thought that with all the negatives I just wouldnt give it to her - still in hospital after her birth (a day or two) she wouldnt stop crying for ages then my husband stuck his finger in her mouth and she instantly stopped crying - she wasnt hungry but just wanted it and I wasnt going to argue - she is nearly 4 now and her teeth are fine and I can find no ill effects from it apart from the fact that although she has given it up during the day she still wants it at night and now I have to work out how to get it off her - she is affraid of Santa so I dont want to use Santa as the one who is taking it from her so Im thinking the Easter Bunny :) I didnt know about the SIDS thing but this just makes me happier that I did give it to her.

Both my children are fine and never had pacifiers, nothing has been proven to why SIDS happens so they really cant determine what will exactly stop it. Which i heard recently on the nerws somewhere. Im 21 weeks with my 3rd child and do not plan to use pacifiers.
My brother and I were both non-pacifier babies, so was my parents.
Thats what a thumb is for, a baby cant exactly turn around and pick up the thing and stick it back in its mouth. Ive seen that on other babies and they will sit there and cry until someone puts the damn thing back in there mouths.
They will find other soothing methods if you keeping showing them how, pacifier and thumb are basically the same thing. One happens to be attached to the other.
There are ALOT of thing that they say MAY cause SIDS but they themselves, dont even know why SIDS happens at this point.
Within the last year someone in my apartment complex lost her baby to SIDS and he used a pacifier.

Not sure about the fact about SIDS, but I have seen children become too attached to their dummies and when they start attending childcare or preschool, it can be a real problem. I have worked in a nursery and hygiene was a real issue with the children that had dummies. They kept dropping them on the ground, other children would pick it up...etc.

Very interesting information. I agree with you on sticking with pacifiers vs. thumb sucking because it is more sanitary. You just need to make sure you boil them and replace them often.

Well thanks for the info, im pregnant with my first child. Everything has its pro's and con's tho. I mean the positive definately outweigh the negatives on this one. But im not looking forward to pulling the dummy away from my baby boy as he gets older. There are just so many attachments that babies get due to fear of change.

i definitely did not know this. my older sister died from SIDS and my mom never gave them to us. that was also before the baby's on back method was known. but my little step- brothers used them. when they were around 11 - 12 months old we just had them throw them all in the garbage and they waved bye and that was it.

well it depends on the parent.... my mother bought me 1 and i didn't like it.... they probably have seen 4 or 5 year olds holding them in thier mouths so they do not want thier child to do that when he/she is older. also many parents do not take into account that pacifiers may save thier lives.

I really doubt the claim you make about them reducing the incidence of SIDS.
