i have an '86 El Camino in which the speedometer doesn't work. It was ECU controlled, but somewhere along the line someone dropped in a carb'd 350. i love the engine and carb, but is there a way to hook the speedometer up w/out the ECU? Is it mechanical or does it have to have the computer? thanks.

Take a look behind the speedometer. If it's got a large threaded connection it's mechanical and you can control it with a cable from the transmission. If there are just electrical plugs, it's not going to work without some sort of aftermarket speedometer control. Your best bet if you have an electric speedometer is to go look for an earlier (but '79 or later) El Camino or Malibu in a junkyard and see if you can find a mechanical speedometer. However, as most car speedometers have a standard setup, any mechanical speedometer that fits should work.

I don't think so. They used to be mechanical, but no more. So IF it was ECU controlled before, you have to have the ECU. Which you don't. There is no way to mechanically hook it up that I know of. But I might be wrong on this one. There MIGHT be a way. But I doubt it.

yes you can get a after market speedometer that runs off a cable at like NAPA or ask them if they can get a sensor to run it with the ECU
