The unique three-letter identifier unique to each airport is used to facilitated the tracking of all airport transmitted data, not only flights and weather. The three letter is now; but before 1930 it was two letters which came from the weather station codes. With the increase in the number of airports, it was necessary to add a letter. LA became LAX. There is no record that I know of that explain why the X was chosen. But I suspect that it was so because it was easier to remember and use. The letter X does mean anything in particular.

The X alone doesn't mean anything. everyone knows what LAX means, just as most know that PDX means Portland and IAH means Houston. Additionally, anything that starts with a "Y" means Canada. How do they get Y out of Canada? There is a famous song by Rush called YYZ, which is Toronto's airport.

People selected and added the third alphabetic character for the airport such as DEN, LGB, SFO, LAX, ... would usually have some meaning in their mind. LAX may be Los Angeles Transit/Transportation/Transmit... I don't think X stands for "international".

Every US airport has a 3 letter designator. Los Angeles is LAX while San Fransisco is SFO. Denver is DEN and LaGuardia is LGA. We type the 3 letter identifier in our onboard navigation systems to help us locate the airport enroute.

I hope that helps.

It's just a name, it doesn't stand for anything. It's just like "SFO". It's to make it sound different from other airports, so it's unique and so it doesn't get confused with airports in other states or even countries, because there are so many of them.
