No one knows for sure. Theories range from rhesus monkeys or chimpanzees in Africa transferring the disease to humans to conspiracy theories of the World Health Organization creating the virus and spreading it using vaccines for other diseases in Africa.
It's a good question, but there are no answers at this time.

HIV and SIV (the monkey equivalent) are retroviruses that most probably arises from retransmissions gaining further functions and becoming viral. This is a bit counter intuitive in that many people would expect this to accrue in the other direction.

AIDS in a retrovirus. lemme explain... it has a RNA in its cell as opposed to the DNA in a human cell. but like retroviruses it has a unique prperty, that is, it can make the DNA of humasn copy the RNA of it. so once a virus enetr sthe human body, it replicates its genetic structure inside a huma cell... and by normal process of replication, a human cell also replicates, thereby replicating cells with the gentic structure of an HIV virus.
and viruses like them are available in plenty all over. it just needs to come in conatct with human fluid with the help of which it transfres to other humans...
get it??

I heard it was through transmission by people in West Africa who eat 'bush meat' .....ie apes like chimpanzees!?
As viruses generation time is very short mutations that are able to jump the species barrier is greater, especially with species that are similar genetically.
