When I was in college my roomate had a ferret- I got really attached to the little guy ( I Love him SO much! )

My roomate moved to New York and kind of let the ferret with me,
I moved back home to California ( where they are illegal.. ) and things changed a little, my apartment is very small so Toby ( my ferret ) doesn't have as much room - ( in our old place, he had his own room and run of the house for several hours a day- )
with my current situation that's just not possible.

I also have to have friends pet sit when I got out of town for a few days a month.

I've been thinking about making the hard decision to give toby to a ferret rescue center in arizona. I know ferretts are illegal in CA and I want to make sure he goes to someone who understands the responsibity of owning a ferret- and he lives with someone who wants him not just because he's cute.
My old roomate is mad- and she says i'm selfish, that toby will miss me and that this will hurt him.
what do I do?

Here are 2 Califonia ferret rescues that may be the better answer? You might ask them about how the ferret will bond with a new home, and set your mind at ease..> http://www.cdfa.org/

if you feel that you cannot give the Ferret the best care it needs, including medical care since they are illegal where you live, I think you should give it to animal rescue or ASPCA in Arizona. They will make sure it gets a very good hometo a person knowledgeable about them. They just don't give them to anyone. I know, it hurts to give them up, but if it is for the best, then do so. You can always call and ask about it. It is too bad your old roomate is saying this and putting you on a guilt trip, after all, she was the one who left it in the first place! You will be fine after you find out that Toby is happy with a new family and all vet checked and all. You are not selfish at all, you are doing the best thing for Toby. God Bless You.

No, your doing the right thing. As hard as it may be & it much as it hurts if youve found yourself in a situation that you just cant provide Toby w the attention & care that he needs then a rescue if probably your BEST option, they wont put him down & will make sure he gets loving home. Your roomate is just upset as Im sure you are too, dont let her/him get you down, your being a responsible pet owner. Im sure Toby will mis syou but he will adjust when he gets settled into a new home & will be happy again. Sorry to hear youve got to give up your friend, I recently had to give away one of my cats due to problems he was causing at my home & even though he went to a GREAT home & I know the person it was still hard to give him up, I had him since he was akitten & he was 3.

yes he will miss you Im sure but it is better for him to go with someone that will have time for him forget about the small space Im sure he doesnt mind as long as he is with you and still able to play and on the illegal issue alot of people have illegal pets its not like your gonna go scream it off the rooftop I have a ferret how is anyone gonna know I say you should keep your lil guy if your just worried about the illegal part and the space I mean come one ferrets are not big at all but if its because your not able to spend time with it or not comitted to take care of him then give him to someone that will be and as for your friend if you do decide to get rid of him tell her why dont she take him that way you can still see him from time to time he used to be hers anyways he will be used to her but he will miss you good luck

Your roommate is mad at you and she's the one that left him first.Go figure. Try to find him a home yourself and if you can't then take him to the center. They will find him a good home.Do check with your pet sitters they might have got attached to Toby too.My Yorkie is named Toby oh my bad,I mean Sir Tobias.

It's the right thing to do. I know it's hard, but the right thing usually is.

As for the old roommate - she's the one that bailed on Toby in the first place. Who is she to be mad about anything??

it would be selfish of you to keep him..as heartbreaking as it is it would be the right thing to do and like you said keeping him would be illegal..so there's another good reason
