No-one would be very surprised.
String theory has made no testable predictions to date, and so is entirely unverified. It is quite possibly the least relaible theory in the whole of science at present as a result.
There are alternatives to string theory, though these are eclipsed by the PR that string theorists have engaged in, and one of these would step into the breach.

That seems to be the best we have at the moment from the know facts, just like many theories they can have strong (evolution) or less strong evidence (string theory). That's what's great about the scientific process it constantly questions it' assumptions through peer review.
Great if string theory is wrong, we find a better one to replace it!!?

Then we would have to come up with something different. At the moment, the implications of string theory are not sufficiently well understood to be able to perform experiments to test them. A lot more theoretical work is needed before any testable predictions are likely to be found.

Assumptions of string therory are not "wrong", but they cannot be verified.

Then it'd be back to square one.
It's happened before.
