There are many different versions of this story and magic is only one way she gets to have the fancy clothes and slippers. Getting free royal ballroom clothes is any young girls fantasy so I guess that is what it is all about.
If the slipper did turn back to normal or simply disappeared there would be no continuation of the story and no clues left for the prince to track her down. (no, there was no CSI to analyze any hairs left behind at that time)
The theory that only what ever was touching the body of Cinderella vanished doesn't work since in that case she could have just stripped and walked away with ever lasting ballroom attire (and really get the prince's attention).

As I recall the fairy tale, Cinderella's ragged clothing was turned into a ball gown, but the fairy godmother GAVE the glass slippers to Cinderella immediately afterward. This suggests that they existed in their own right, and would have remained after the spell's magic was gone.
Good question!

That was part of the nature of the spell as Cinderella was a princess her self and was meant to marry the prince that gave the ball . so when the one slipper fell off and was found the other one did not change so that there would be another means of confirming that the slipper was hers . After all it was her fairy godmother that made the items for her. So that they would only fit on her body.

There is always a fail safe in magick. The fairy god mother did it to help Cinderella be happy, because it didn't work the slipper stayed behind for him to find her so they can be happy together.
It could also be like Pandora's box, when everything escaped hope remained, that glass slipper was hope.

So the prince could find it and use it to find his one true love. Of course! Fairy Tales have to have a Happily Ever After as imagine if it happened in the real world. The Prince would most likely be disinterested in the fact that she had run off and if he did find the slipper, he'd sniff it and say, god she had stinky feet am glad I didn't end up with her. He would then marry a girl whos dad had heaps of money and live off his in laws for the rest of his life!

Well, you're assuming that that's the Disney version of Cinderella.
My friend told me that the real Cinderella had no fairy godmother or fancy ballgowns. She simply didn't go, and later murdered her stepsisters.
Disney has a tendency to overlook these things...and mutilate fairy tales.

Because it wasn't on her foot? BS. The slipper that remained on her foot didn't "return as before", either.
"As soon as the coach passed the gates, the spell was broken. But a glass slipper remained on her foot."

The glassslipper was the magic.. in itself, it was a dream that came true for Cinderella, thus giving her hope.
