Which would you pick? If someone told you they had the truth about something (personal or something about life/the world) but knowing it would make you very unhappy, would you say 'Yes, tell me, it's better to know' OR 'I'm happy with my life the way it is, if it'll make me sad why would I want to know!' There is a saying:'You're better off not knowing'. Is there truth in this?

Truth. Happiness without truth is merely illusion.

I think your question should be more context sensitive.

For instance, do I want to know if the Bush Administration is tapping my phone, even though it will tick me off? Yes, because that knowledge gives me power to act in ways that could make my life and others more free (even if I wouldn't be happier).

On the other hand, do I want to know if my best friend thinks I dress funny? No. That knowledge could either lose me a friend, make me self-conscious about my clothes, or both.

Sometimes the truth can set us free, and we should embrace it. Sometimes, though, the truth can just make us miserable for no good reason.

As I look back at your question, though, I see that you want us to choose one. I choose happines, assuming that most of the time I'll have to have truth before I can find real, abiding happiness.

Dear Fellah
Always face truth even you get annoyed badly because when you face the truth (desirable or annoying) you see a diciplin in all of them and that should be observed and thought about very good to build up your future life PROPERLY.If you do that, you will find an intense happiness in your life because you played your cards right in this world and God wants you to be just like that to your life and if there was no pain, there would be no happiness @ all!
You see some richmen like some of Hollywood Actors want to suicide after a while they get riched, because of lack of happiness owing to avoiding the annoyable truth facts of their lives.

Yes, there probably is some truth to "you're better off not knowing" but its human nature to want to know. I'd go with truth over happiness.

You open a new field for us. Bravo.
a) There is some truth in all things. Elsewise evil would not have any credibility to lure us astray.
b) You see few monuments to happy but many which purport to point toward truth.
c) There are few happies handed down by history, but many claims to truth.
d) Truth in its myriad forms, scientific, historical, etc, receives enormous funding and the output of energy. Far less so is happy.
e) Happy is transient while truth shines through generations.

I would be happy in knowing the truth...But maybe not so happy about what the truth is. Its a win win situation.

I choose truth. I don't ever want to live in ignorance.

"there is no greater poverty than ignorance, no greater wealth like knowledge".

If i know what the problem is then i can fix it. if a cant fix it then at least i know it is there.

Truth, even if the truth's not always beautiful. We'll get sad for a while, but we'll get over it and be glad that we know the truth instead of living the happy lies.

yes, there is alot of truth - sometimes ignorance is bliss - ie. if someone wanted to tell you that your lover had another lover and you were the jealous type and knew that you would act out in a way that would cause BOTH of you harm what good would it bring to know ? It would end your relationship completely. it is kind of like people that insit on being right - it is at times easier to say I am wrong - let's say someone said if you eat glass you will be unharmed and you said no I would be harmed - so - to show them that you are right you eat glass - then you are right, but DEAD and right.

Happiness is happiness. Truth is what it is. I like to know the truth, but given the choice, if I could be TRULY happy, I would take happiness.
