Yes. Not the psychic kind, the psychological kind. They're excellent at manipulation. They can frame every conversation to make you feel guity and inadequate. They can shift blame in half a second. Whenever you try to pin them down, they shift the topic without you even noticing, sucking you into defending your "horrible" personality flaws.

They spend their lives mastering these techniques. You really can't beat them at it. All you can do is leave.

By the way, this is coming from experience with a real person I lived with. Not a woman. Just someone. Most of you will be unlikely to encounter this type of person.

Psychological mind control, psychological dominance is quite real. If someone has a charismatic personality, is controlling, dominating and insecure, watch out: you have all the makings for an abusive partner or spouse. Clearly that seems to be what has happened to you.

At one point I was in that same place. It was my first marriage; I'm married again and quite a bit happier, because my husband is NOT jealous, NOT insecure, and is a secure, happy, confident person within himself, so he has no need to control or manipulate anyone else, especially me, his wife.

My first husband was passive-aggressively hostile, although in my 20s, I had no idea what this was. I really think he had a psychological disorder. He had a crappy childhood; he told me once he was abused growing up in Appalachia. He left home at 17 and made it on his own although times were tough. I really believe he was clinically depressed and undiagnosed. I also think he was very possibly latently gay and so far back in the closet that he was in denial. And finally I think he was impotent, but too embarrassed or old-fashioned or *something* to seek help.

What other people have said here is right. If someone tries to control you, that person is highly insecure, jealous, manipulative, and is not acting in your best interests. Don't believe them if they ever tell you they are doing anything TO you for your own good. Secure, confident people respect others and let people live their own lives! As an adult, a real friend and a real equal partner will understand intuitively that you're an adult, so you are responsible for your own life. You are free to do what you want because you know the consequences of your behavior, and if you make a mistake, then it's your life. People who are insecure and manipulative don't really believe that other people are capable of living their own lives, and that infantilizes other people.

So, congratulations on having woken up. Now you have to ask yourself, am I better off with him or without him? Only you know the answer to that question. If you are better with him, you certainly need marriage counseling. Your relationship is going to go through rocky times as you re-gain your personal power and independence back. If you are better off without him, then make a plan and get out within a year's time, and make sure that you have a support system of other people. Make sure no matter what that you can support yourself economically and emotionally when or if you leave.

Mind control, manipulation and such is very insidious. Emotional abuse is hard to pin down because sometimes even the abuser doesn't realize what he's doing. Emotional abuse and manipulation is creeping, slow, insidious... but your gut feeling is always right. Sometimes it does take a long time to wake up to what's happening. But whatever you do, don't blame yourself. You woke up; that's what counts. Now be assertive and pro-active and plan how you want the rest of your life to go.

Good luck. Cheers, K

this is possible, my ex had me in a trance for 3 years, i still dont feel emotionally safe around him { we have a 2 year old son together }.
when we finally broke up every body said id turned into a different person like he had hypnotized me. he was paranoid, controlling, insecure, he used to boobie trap the house when he was at work so he'd know what i had done through the day, he even knew how my friends put their smokes out so when he got home he would check the ashtray and know who had been there and how long they stayed.
it is so hard to leave somebody like that, i still find myself trying to make him happy. i was so unhappy by the time i left him but at the same time feeling completely lost with out him i had become so relient on him for approval that i felt like i couldnt make a decition without him.
we got back together for 2 months and i lost all my family and friends, we have been seperated now for 2 years but i'll never be rid of him because of our son.

The possibility of that actually happening to you is as remote as you winning the lottery.
Do you remember ever being hypnotized by him or anyone else?
