In almost all the TV & movie depictions of computer use, they seem to only use the keyboard no matter how simple or complex the task, never the mouse. What, is the tapping of keys more dramatic or something!?

Yes its for drama. they are not doing anything on the computer while filming and a mouse is bland looking.
the click of the keys the speed of the hands makes the character look smarter,

That is something I never thought of till you mentioned it. But you are right, I can't think of a movie where they used a mouse.

Because they are using old school computers...when the mouse wasn't invented yet

It's used for dramatics.


Mice don't make a lot of sound, therefore people can't really connect with it on the screen. Typing however.... :P
