The typical number of chromosomes in a human cell is 46 - two pairs of 23 - holding an estimated 30,000 to 35,000 genes. One set of 23 chromosomes is inherited from the biological mother (from the egg), and the other set is inherited from the biological father (from the sperm).

Scientists count chromosomes by how many individual strands they have because not every organism has pairs. You probably have 46 chromosomes. Peas only have 12. A dog has 78. The number of chromosomes is not related to the intelligence or complexity of the creature. There is a crayfish out here with 200 chromosomes. There are even creatures of the same species with different numbers of chromosomes.
