Hi. A screensaver is a program that used to be used a lot on computers that were required to have the monitor on all the time (Back in the days of DOS programing). Like an old viddy game, if you leave just the desktop screen on your monitor for long periods of time (don't turn it off) that image will actually 'burn' itself permanetly onto your screen! A screensaver is a timed prog. that goes into effect if your monitor is unused for a set period of time, so the image dosen't burn into the screen. Thing is with screensavers- you really don't need them anymore- the best way to avoid an image burn is to just TURN OFF the monitor when you walk away from it for a long time.!
Plus side of screensavers= they are often kind of pretty to look at..

Once upon a time screensavers were used to protect the screen against damage if left unused for long. that is no more the case now with new monitors. Screensavers are now used for fun and cheer. View some here- http://www.screene.com

A screensaver is what prevents images from burning on to your computer screen when your not using it, that's why screensavers are always in motion and kick in due to inactivity.

I agree with Doc and Debster with their answers. You don't have to worry about this though on LCD displays and most of the newer CRTs are pretty good not burning any images onto the glass.

Like the previous posts said, it is something that stays in motion, it does this because of the radiation of a CRT monitor, if an image stays in the same spot for a long time, it will end up getting burnt onto the glass of the monitor.

If you don't have an LCD display yet, I suggest you get one because there are many advantages to it now.....
no more problem with the burnt screen
uses less energy
uses less space
easier on the eyes

Hope this helps!

If the same image is projected to your monitor for too long, that image "Burns" into the screen, and a shadow of that image is always present. A screen saver is a program that kicks in if your computer has been sitting idle for too long, and generally that screen saver generates a moving image that keeps the same thing from appearing on your monitor for too long.

It is to protect the life of screen with it is keep idle for too long.
If you are true about protecting it, it is best to choose blank, so that no burning occur on the screen.
