I asked a question about cutting, and a couple people responded by calling me emo in what was clearly intended to be an insulting manner. I'm clearly not emo, and it shouldn't be an insult anyhow, so it seems silly to me. Why do some people insist on doing that anyway?

I dont know, but I agree with you. To me "emo" means cool. I think of underground music and clothes.

I deal with "emo" kids all day long. They truly are losers. It was an insult. The reason they do that is because they're ignorant of the REASONS people cut themselves. I was. Then i took a few courses in Uni. The problem is complex, but treatable.

Cutting is a serious issue. You MUST talk to a professional about it. It's important that you do this. Don't be embarrassed by it, just get some help. Once you're better, you'll look on those scars as badges of pride. You will conquer this..

I'd say that since you're putting the question out there, you're seeking help and on the path to recovery. Keep talking about it. You'll be surprised at how many other people do it too.

You'll be fine. Good luck.

If you're cutting you have a serious problem that needs professional help. Calling you emo is just a statement that you are seeing life as a drama instead of as an adventure. Calling you emo is just a statement that you are acting out in negative, or non-constructive, ways. Again, if you're cutting you have a serious problem and need professional help right away. There is nothing in this post that is intended as a put down. Good luck; life is what you make it and yes it's full of ups and downs. There's a country song I heard today that said God gave us mountains so that we could learn to climb. Get some help and start seeing life, a one shot deal, as the adventure that it truly is.

Ellie, it seems to me that you are a attention seeker, why don't you go to bed tonight and have a good think about what your doing to yourself. Its because of what your doing that people see you as something stupid and that makes them call you names.
If you just got on with your life in a normal way people don't bother you.
You seem very intelligent for your age (besides the cutting business) use this intelligence, STOP cutting yourself.
Think of the future when you are married with kids with a good career and enjoying your life. The last thing you need when your a beautiful grown up lady is little purple slash marks on your body or arms. Make your Mum and Dad proud of you!!
By the way this is the longest reply i have ever done, and you look nothing like emo. see ya. Make people wanna be ya.

Emo is a genre of music. But the type of music is associated with goth (fake ones if you ask me), self pity, poor me attitudes, I want to die because my g/f/b/f left me type people. People always are critical about what they do not understand. Even I have made fun of or called people emo usually as a joke when my friends ***** about childish things but ignore it they obviously have no idea what they are talking about and they should be educated.

EDIT: EMO: Abbreviation for EMOtional

I don't know I guess there is a whole idea about any group that a person might fit into. I like Emo music so I don't see the big deal.

I heard some hackers saying that only Emo's use MySpace. But they now have 108,000,000 (million) members now so...............

Bono has a Myspace so is he Emo now? I don't think so. I hope you are not cutting are you?

People are afraid of emo people because they dont understand them. I can see why, I mean, I personally wouldn't want to hang out with them. Too many problems and wayy to much drama. I'm sorry if that offends them, but good gosh, we ALL got problems.

Well EMO's are different, and different people are easy to make fun of. In making fun of other's you are hurting thier self-esteem, in hurting others self-esteem your own self esteem level is now higher than those you have hurt which in turn feels good. This is my understanding of the world anyway.

usually the word "emo" brings to mind such an array of insults that one doesn't have to rely solely on "emo" for an insult.
