If you have any friends who do know how to dance, ask them for pointers! If not, pick someone and be bold! Ask them for help! (most anyone cool and fun will be happy to oblidge you!)
So, don't think about your feet.... in your room in front of a mirror, listen to music with your eyes closed... listen to the beat, the drums, the bass... don't look at yourself, start with your hips! Move your waist, and your thighs and feet will follow. As for your hands, swing them at your sides with the beat and you're on your way! Good luck and have fun!
*Remember, it doesn't matter what other people think, as long as you are having a good time, they will enjoy you too. (I love to dance like nobody's watching, and I don't care if I'm the only one on the dance floor! You just have to NOT CARE!) Even if you look like a dork doing it, having fun is the most important thing!

hmmm, maybe you are rhythm challenged! I have never had any trouble finding a beat. Maybe you could practice tapping out the beat to songs - or, hey, learn to drum from a drum tutor or take a class, so you learn how to hear the beat accurately.
If it helps, most rock and pop songs are 4/4 time, the beat goes 1234, 1234. Just shift your weight back and forth 1 (right side) 2(left side) 3 (right) 4 (left)...another thing, I realise I do this, is to listen and move to the bass in a song. The lowest notes in a tune have the strongest rhythm.

get into the rythym of the music, follow some sort of body pattern. Do different moves for different beats or parts of a song.
I don't know, but I"m always moving in a smooth motion that looks like a picture or a piece of art. I guess the way i like things is symmetrical, so thats how i do everything, balanced out.

To be with the music, you actually need to be a little ahead of the music. I suggest taking a coulple of dance classes. Not necessarily for the steps, but for the feel of it. Check out what you can find in local YMCA or local dance studios. This website has some short instructional videos: http://www.ballroomdancers.com as well as a listing of studios. Many studios offer hip hop and other styles besides ballrom and ballet. Classes may seem slow, but it is actually very effective.

Take a few dance lessons. Check your local community center, or college, or night school program. There are hundreds of people who don't know how to dance and these courses are designed especially for them. You meet other people and you all learn together, with capable instructors.
You'll be a whiz at the prom!

Most large metro areas have dance studios where you can go and learn just about any dance routine you like. I was in the same boat and a girl asked me to dance. I told her I didn't know how. She asked: "Well, can you bounce?" I said yeah I think so. And ofcourse she said: "Then bounce." So, I bounced the night away and had a great time. Now, I'm a bouncer, lol.

Watch some dancing DVD and learn from it. Begin with slow dance like waltz or cha-cha.Close your eyes and feel the music. Move your body and then feet. Hand in high above the sky. Feel like flying~

Don't try to get too fancy with it. Just find the beat and sway this way and that with it. When you are able to do that you can add your arms. Bend them up and keep swaying. Practice at home to the radio. You will feel it when you are on the beat (and when you are off).
If you are slow dancing, let him lead. Be like a doll in his arms and just follow him.
good luck!
