I'm up in the Port Huron area, there are plenty of campgrounds up this way; I think the only State run park/campground up here is the Lakeport State Park/Campground which isn't too bad (I've been to the campground a couple times before while my lady friend's parents were camping up here and also to the park itself which is right along Lake Huron). The park is also kind of neatly situated where it is fairly isolated but not too far from either the small town/village of Lexington and/or the larger city of Port Huron. Not really a camper-type myself. Hope these folowing links are more helpful; the last link does a pretty good job describing Lakeport state Park (click on the S.E. Michigan section from that web-site).

go to the KOA site or the state parks - there are a ton of them., really depends on where you live that you consider southern. the huron river is a great area and has ann arbor and the wiards apple orchard nearby - lots of fun.
enjoy!
