Derrick Nolan sounds good. It allows him to have a conservative and somewhat common name, but also to have a unique one too, that he can choose to use as much or little as he likes. As far as the spelling, go with what you like - this is part of the fun of naming a child! Just be prepared to spell it out on a regular basis.
I'm presuming these are two names that you like, and/or are family names. If it's a sports star's name, I'd advise against it. A cousin named one of his twins after a hockey goalie, and while his team-obsessed friends probably think it's cool, it seems a little over the top to me.
Plus, imagine years down the road, that player's career goes for an extreme nosedive (ex. poor performance, arrest, drug/alcohol problems), now your child is named after some washed-up wreck that's a poor role model, instead of a family member or friend whom you greatly admire, respect, and/or plays a positive role in the life of your child.

What if you spell Derrick a little different? Maybe: Dereke or Darick? For the middle name how about : Tyler?
