A classic metaphor of sorts, implying that their heart was struck so hard it did not simply break; it was crushed into more pieces than is conceivable to count in milennia, let alone in one lifetime.
I do find it cliche, but that's not to say it isn't exactly what you (or whoever) is feeling. Cliches exist because they are universal, and I've simply never had my heart broken.

I always like the imagery of the sun burning out. While it refers to an almost unimaginable time millions of years in the distant future, it also refers to a time when all life will cease on the planet. There is a sadness to the reference of the sun burning out and all life on earth ending-however it is not a horrid event as it will happen so long from now.
I also like the phrase: "The last perfect day."

How can you mend a broken heart, how can you
stop the rain from coming down, how can you stop
the hurt from coming what makes the world go around
broken hearts to much to bear it would take forever
to mend this broken heart.

Typical romanticism about love. Extreme expressions trying to convey that no amount of time can heal the pain of broken heart.

It sounds good for the immediate moments of existential pain. But it ignores the reality of time. It is not the sun's eclipse, but our own which drives us to mend our hearts and continue life.

A great quote. I have not yet experienced such pain, but the pain I have gone through leaves no doubt in my mind that heartbrake is something one can only rate once one has felt it him/herself.

but suddenly,
as I held all the
pieces of my
broken heart,
on my shaking
hands,
a ray of light,
from above,
the clouds
dispersed,
and it was
full moon
again.
a new start
with a tiny
ray of light...
