Are they 'needed'. I guess not. More of just a very very strong want if you ask me. Someone can survive without social outlets. It'd just be a sucky life. I mean, yes, we all get burned by friends and loved ones. It sucks, but it'll happen. It just means it's time to write them off and be careful who you 'let in'.

Believe it or not, it really is chemical, its a combination of chemicals in our brain that give us this want, you can live without this need fufilled, however you are probably going to have to make up for it in other areas of development, such as studying for 5 or 6 hours a day, i know college buddies who dont have girl friends or anything like that, but they either play sports alot or study alot.

No, you can't. Try a little experiment, go into a closet and try and stay in there for 8 hours. If you can stay in there that long and not feel anything than maybe your a special person that can exist with out human contact. You have to understand the basic principles of life, in that everything and everybody are connected. As far as pain, pain is an emotion we all have to deal with and go thru in order to grow and mature to be a better person. Try to be patient with those in your life that cause this pain and pray.

Actually no - we can not. Psychologically as an adult people who go for more than 7 days without any sort of contact (no tv, no radion, no books, no anything) with other humans start to degrade both emotionally and psychologically.

if you want a good example of this look up "failure to thrive" in infants. Babies who do not recieve enough attention and interaction with others actually die.

So the very easy answer to your question is: no you can not live without human relationships.

You can live without painful relations, but you would be hard-pressed to find happiness in a world where you are all alone.
