i ran my car out of gas but when i put more in it it does not want to run long and when i gat it to run for bit it will turn off does the car need to sit for awhile before messing with it

you didnt put diesel in it did you?
another way to recover from running out ; is to spray carb cleaner in thru a vacuum bib by removing a vacuum hose from it. or putting it in to the intake somehow. carefull not too much.
also;running out of fuel can ruin the fuel pump it must have gas in it when it runs . or it frys it.

Dam how can so many people be so wrong.
It sounds like you burnt out the pump. It is in the gas tank and needs to be replaced. You will have to drop the tank to replace the pump
When you ran out of gas you had no gas to lube the pump so it burned out.
Have the fuel pump pressure checked and if it is low have the pump replaced.
