I don't think it really plays a role anymore.
I don't know anyone other than myself who listens to it.
Sometimes i try to get my husband into it and he'll listen but only to please me. It's not like he really enjoys it.
Personally, i adore classical music. I study to it, read to it, sleep to it, dance to it, ect... It's just one of my favorite genres. But this may be due to the fact that i grew up learning how to play the flute, violin, and the guitar. Music was always a huge part of my life.
Classical music is the absolutely beginning of music in general, in my opinion. If you notice, most artists use Beethoven's beats or Mozart or Bach. These composers play a huge role in how today's music sounds. For instance, Nas's I Can uses one of Mozart's major symphonies. Basically, classical music is the foundation of all music. The main reason being that it's excellent. It's wondrous. It's magnificent. It signifies a great part of history. And i'm not a real fan of current classical composers, i'm an oldie.
So in short, the role of classical music in society today is deep in regards to music artists and their inspiration. It is shallow in terms of the majority.
Nobody appreciates it anymore.
But it's important...
It's importance lies in its history, the way it can make people feel, the way adding bits and pieces to movies can add or diminish the emotional quality, ect...

classical music will forever have a place in society because it is a beautiful and well crafted form of auditory history; every bit as important as a newspaper headline, or famous historical quote or mathematical equation or favorite joke. Music, more than most things, can sum up an era, or a thought, or a feeling, or an event. beside this type of music expands human understanding and consciousness.

Its major roles in modern society are background music for fireworks on Independence Day and the music you hear on hold or in elevators. It's a damn shame really.

Seriously:
...it is one form of musical artistic expression that reflects the changes in some people's world-view
...it is a reflection of history and culture (although admittedly Western/European, in general)
...it stirs both the mind and the emotions (well, at least for some)
AND
...it gives some people something to fight/be snooty about (just kidding!)
Disclaimer: I Listen to Classical - and I am VERY Heterosexual, Thank You.
Some of my friends (who are not) ALSO listen to it - but NOT for the "reasons" certain people claim...
