His wife and mother were deaf, they wouldn't have heard what he would have said. I read that somewhere. He also hoped to invent something to prevent deafness.

It may have at least hard with his wife since she was deaf. And, it was thanks to her dad that he received the patten for the telephone because Elisha Gray of Chicago patented it on the same day but i think only 2 hours later.
