1) Because Da Vinci said it was his best.
2) Because the Mona Lisa at times appears to be smiling, but other times does not. (It actually depends upon where you are looking: if you look at the eyes the shadows on the cheeks make it appear that the mouth is up-turned, but if you look at the mouth, it isn't smiling. It's merely an illusion. A mathematician figured all of this out a few years ago and it was published in some scientific journals. I'm fuzzy on the details, but it had to do with the ratios of light to shadow on the cheek.)
3) Because it's never been resolved if this wasn't a painting of Da Vinci himself, in drag, to express the duality of man and human sexuality.
4) Of course, all of these answers seem rather lame to me. It's a small painting that never did much for me. I've often found myself asking the same question.

Monalisa is one of the most famous paintings because its controversial.Controversial because it got stolen. Secondly it is a self portrait of Da vinci. Also if you see the portrait, it has mixed features. So it is actually the imagination of Da vinci as to wat he would be look like if he was a woman instead of a man.
It is also controversial that originally it was claimed to be that of a model. But this claim was put to rest as there was no detail evidence of this. also it was against Da vinci's practice. Da vinci was a methodical man and he noted every detail and documented all. But Monalisa has no notes or detail or description in Vinci's documents

Very few figures in art have a smile of any sort. This smile just made people curious as to what it meant because it expresses something so different from anything else anyone had ever seen before. It is very compelling for this reason.
