If someone asks you to do something important, and you don't want to do it, do you find it hard to refuse?
Example : Saying no, I don't want to see that movie, is not important compared to no, I don't want to marry you, etc....;D

I used to.

When you are younger you don't have the confidence to say "no". You don't like to upset people and you want the whole world to love you.

If you say "no" to someone you feel compelled to give them a reason.
"Sorry, I don't have time" or "I would love to but the doctor said I have to take it easy for a couple of weeks" or whatever.

Now I'm 64 and I'm expected to be a grumpy old man.
All 64 year old men are expected to be grumpy - it's what we are supposed to do - so that's waht I do. I grump!
And hey! it's fun.

Now, if someone comes up to me in the street holding a clipboard and asks me, "Excuse me, sir. Can you spare 10 minutes to fill out this research thing on our new biscuit product?" I answer - "No."

That's it.
"No"

They stand there waiting for you to come up with a good reason - "er . . . . I have a funny tummy and I can't eat biscuits...." but there's no need. They asked me a question, and the answer is either yes or no.

Try it. It's fun.

Especially when someone shakes a tin under your nose and says, "Give me some money for the deprived rabbits of Peru."

"No"

"Hey buddy. Take this leaflet and it will give you 90% off your next meal at Buddy's Diner so long as you eat between 3am and 3.10am"

"No."

I've had younger people come up to me in the street and compliment me. "Hey, wish I had the guts to say that."

Guts? To say "No"?

Try it.

I always found it hard to say "no" to most things, until I heard this advice. Practice saying "no" in a few different ways - "no, I don't wish to", "no, but thanks for asking", "no, thankyou", and "no, it won't be possible" - are just a few. The other piece of advice was, never give excuses. I tried it, and it works. You just have to get used to the awkward moment as people wait for an excuse. I have trained myself now to stay silent and smile, or quickly move on to another subject. It's difficult for the person to bring it up again without seeming rude. A young woman where I work has it down to a fine art - she seems so shy and retiring, but has no problems saying no to people. She simply says "no, it's not in my heart!"

Yes I do. I did get married in fact thinking that I didn't want to, but I thought things would "fix themselves." So I didn't say no cause I felt too guilty backing out on my wedding day.

So now I'm divorced. haha.

"Good gosh Kimberly, it sure used to be difficult to say no; however, the older I got the more I've found that you should not get involved in things that you just don't want to do except those that "must" be done.
Yes, now I'm old and I have equal dislike in saying "no" and/or "yes."

Yes, but if someone were to ask me to marry him, and knowing that I didn't want to, I'd say no. That would ruin my life. Other than that, I'm a push-over.

I use to. But not anymore I don't. I got tired of people taking advantage of me. So I learned real quickly to say the word No. And it does not bother me what so ever.

yes it is hard. Rita Bruce (below) theory is that we all have some one(s) it's hard to say NO to -- for some of us parents, others partner, others friends, others our children --- and which group it is says something about our personality.

For those of us who have an exaggerated fear of rejection it is extra hard.

Yes, but it gets easier with practice and soon you`ll find people aren`t expecting you to do ridiculous things.

We find it hard to say no because we try to please everybody. Stand your ground. If you not willing just say "NO". You need not offer any explanation or sorry for saying that. You lead your own live and not other people's live.
