When she is in Silent Hill she is in something like a parallel world, kind of like a ghost. Her return home is similar. I think that it was a good way to open up the door for the second Silent Hill. Remember when the dark one climbed up the latter at the end and look at her little girl then the little girl fainted (?). I think that was the turning point that kept her from returning to the normal world. That is how I understood it anyway. Good movie btw!

Rose and Cheryl were still trapped in the parallel world of silent hill. They got home but the girls are still in the greyish, whitish ashy thingy world and the guy (roses husband / cheryls dad) is in the normal world. With the yay use of close ups and shatty drama, the couple find themselves feeling each other... cause you know, they might be in different worlds but they're sitting on the same sofa. The still-possesed little Cheryl might have something to do with all of that.

The last part is a sort of cliffhanger. Could it be that a part two where most probably, the next protagonist will be the guy who'll be searching for his lost wife and child who were silly enough to have happy times on silent hill- is on the way?

It was established during the games that the town of Silent Hill is a kind of inter-dimensional weak spot, where it's easy to slip between one dimension and another. There's the normal world (well, it's a bit of a creepy town to start with, but there's as normal as it gets), then there's the dimension where everything is dark and nasty.

In the original game you made several trips between dimensions, every time you heard that air raid siren you knew the darkness was coming and everything would go nasty - holes in the ground, everything looks broken, covered in rust or blood, there are odd items like wheelchairs and stretchers lying around, bodies (or pieces of bodies) strung up, and monsters start attacking you.

They did the same thing in the film and although they end up home and it looks normal, just foggy, it appears they didn't get back to their original dimension. I guess there are more than two levels to it and they ended up on one that was close to, but not quite the same one as that of her husband.

I've seen it twice and I still don't quite get it. I thought that maybe they died in the car crash. So instead of getting home alive, their souls were allowed to leave and return home because they help Alessa get revenge on the people that burned her. The could have picked a better ending. I was sitting there scratching my head when it was over.

when Sharron opened her eyes she let the "demon" in and as a result they are unable to leave the grey, misty limbo dimension...they were able to leave silent hill because the "demon" wanted to but not that reality
