How do I solve this problem without purchasing a color cartridge?

Some printers will not allow you to print at all if one of the cartridges is empty.

May you can work around this. Next time you print, see if you can set the printer to print in black only. You may be able to get away with this.

If not, check the User's Guide, if you received one, or go to their website for help. HP is pretty good with support.

I don't think you can print without getting a new cartridge. But my understanding is that if you print with an empty cartridge, it will overheat and cause permanent damage to the print heads.

So I would say don't even try.

you can switch your printing preferences to grayscale only. this will bypass your color problems and allow you to use up the black cartridge
