Call it an open house. You can invite people verbally, via e-mail, or with a printed invitation outlining the timeframe and whether to bring a gift or not. People respond very well to this, as there is no pressure to be unusually social, and an appearance is solely for the benefit of the birthday-person.

It's called an Open House. On the invite just say that you're celebrating your birthday with an Open House, between this time and that time and we'd love for you to drop by. That's all. It's cool because it's more casual and your guests don't feel obligated to stay for a 4 hour long party, or whatever.

I did this last year for my big 3-0. I put on the invitations, stop by...starting at 3:00 p.m. and also included a part later that said later crowd can also enjoy....

word of mouth...i do it all the time just tell em be here by a certian time,,,in fact im throwing a impropmtu party on a monday night,,,at 6 everyone will be gone by 730 to 8 as the next day is a work/schoolday
