I also have a half sister on my moms side. But I look nothing like her. My other question would be if first cousins are about as equally related as a half sibing?

No. A half-sibling shares 50% of your genetic code. A cousin shares 50% of 50%, or only 25% -- because your code is only half from your parent, and theirs is only half from their parent, assuming your parents' codes are equivalent. So -- half-siblilngs are (roughly) twice as similar to you as a cousin. This does NOT in any way predict reality, however, since dominant traits depend wholly on your family's particular genes.

Genetics and DNA strands can come up with so many different combos. Plus, your half sister has her father's genes creating her looks too.
No, siblings will always be family bloodwise closer. Though you may share more of the same dominate genes with a cousin from the same side of the family.

Your half sister is half of someone other than your father, of course she looks different, maybe her looks come from her father.

No, you are not related to your first cousin as you are a half sibling because that half sibling is half of one of your parents' blood while a first cousin is from your aunt and uncle, two people completely different from you.

sounds right to me, about half the same genetic heritage in each case

remember, genetics is statistical

everybody knows a family where some of the siblings don't look alike at all, and others look very similar
