If the government would spend a quarter of the money that is spent on the military.. and spend it on healthcare, or building houses for poor families.. our nation would drastically improve... which as much money as the government throws away, they could easily afford to take care of our country by protecting it AND nourishing it.

Current cost of the Iraqi war is 27 BILLION dollars.

Can you imagine how far that money would go towards universal healthcare, medicare, medicaid and social security...

And republicans gripe about social programs... geez.

Yes, the government wastes to much money on all sorts of various programs. Many of which are poorly run welfare programs, that squander millions annually. Problem with these programs is that if a Republican/Democrat decideds to audit and evaluate a program that was introduced by Democratic/Republican, it becomes a big party bash and nothing ever gets fixed.

Note: The United States spends far more money on Social programs than its military!

First of all lets get rid of the programs that aren't working and replace them with programs that will and keep them very closely monitered. This way they can run as effeciently as possible, assuring that the people that are being helped are receiving such aid.

Senate overhaul sounds like an excelent idea in helping acheiving this. Lets ease up on voting back in all of the incumbents.

As far as healthcare, the whole things a huge mess and I can't comment, since I don't have an answer.

You speak of protecting and nourishing things at home. Ask yourself, "Am I as active as I could be in various church programs that help those in need?" "When was the last time I picked up a hammer and helped build a Habitat for Humanities home for someone less fortunate?"

Our government isn't here to be the mother of all of us once we've moved from our parents house! It's just as much yours and mine's responsibility to take care of our brothers and sisters in humanity as it is our governments. At least if we do it, we can be assured that the people in need, are indeed the beneficiaries of our hard work or financial sacrifice.

Considering the rest your comments, regarding the goverment providing housing and so forth, you might prefer a Socialist type Government over our Capitalistic Democracy. Canada has a great healthcare program along with great housing benefits and even paid in full schooling, all the way throughout college and even graduate studies. And at absolutely No cost to you . . . . oh except for the 55% to 78% that the government deducts from each paycheck inorder to pay for all of these wonderful programs.

So, next time you look at one of your paycheck receipts, ask yourself, "How bad is this great US of A that I live so freely in?"

As far as our military spending, you should be thrilled the death that your country has on of the most powerful and well-trained militarys in the world. This isn't to assure that we can kick anybody's *** if we need to. It's to assure that we're such a force to be rekoned with that no one would ever challenge us, therefore assuring the peace. A powerful (expensive) and well-trained military's main goal is to assure the peace.

After 9/11 things changed and it isn't going to go away. We have to act, weither it be by UN sanctions or a full out mililitary envasion. Some people ask, "why do we even worry about a country that's another world away. It's none of our business!"

Well, it is our business and I don't wan't to be in Isreal's shoes 10 years from now. Knowing that there's an enemy with nuculear weapons and a delivery system to get them here. IT CANNOT BE IGNORED, EVEN IF WE HAVE TO SACRIFICE WELFARE PROGRAMS AT HOME!!!!

I too wish we lived in Disney's Magic Kingdom, but once Aladdin decided to strap that IED onto his back, the game plan had to change!

Okay, I'm done ranting for now. :-)

Factually, the government has no money. The government spends it's citizens' money that is collected by various taxes and tariffs.

The idea that we can rob Peter, to pay Paul, is ridiculous. Any American can rise to any status based soley on their personal abilities. Proof of that abounds.

My suggested readings are: The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair; and Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand.

I may have missed some authors names and titles, but read them, you'll be enlightened!

I think every decision to spend a minimum of One Billion outside the US should be put to a local vote by the people.
