It takes forever to open anything up. It's starting to get frustrating! I ran my CCleaner.

Maybe it needs a good housecleaning:

- Are you using a complex screensaver - it runs in the background and eats memory. I had fun with mine, then changed it to blank.

- How many programs do you load at startup? Maybe you should check it out and ensure you are running just what you need.

1. From IE, click Tools, Internet Options
delete cookies
delete files (offline files)
clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want)
click o.k., and Restart

2. click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup

3. Temporarily close Quick Launch:
Right-click on the Taskbar, click Toolbars, deselect Quick Launch

4. Open My Computer
right-click on C:
click Properties
click Tools, select Error Check (check all and fix), when finished click defrag & run.

5. click Start, Run ipconfig renew (type ipconfig space renew)

6. Restart. Right-click on Taskbar, click Toolbars, select Quick Launch to restore

All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take and they help boost speed.

First try complete scans for malware and viruses, and deal with any problems found. Next look in the Startup folder in your Start menu and delete any shortcuts listed there. Now open your Start menu and click Run. Type "msconfig" (without quotes) and click the Startup tab. Uncheck everything you dont need. This should be nearly everything listed, with the possible exception of anti-virus software. Finally, perform a full defrag on your primary hard drive. All that should improve things somewhat.

Too many programs running and SpyWare. (You must be running WinDUD).

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

This double whammy will help keep you safe and running faster

Then go to the START menu and hit RUN. Type MSCONFIG and look at the Startup Programs section. UNCHECK many of the programs that you see. You can see what many of these programs are at my Yahoo Group's PROCESS table in the database section.

Forget the yackadoo about spyware and malware etc
your problem is a major lack of RAM
pump up the available RAM and up comes the speed
Go immediately to downloads.com and find a freeware program called FreeRam XP Pro run this pitbull on your system and watch the response time zip ------------->>>>>
Then--in awhile -- when your ready--buy some extra memory for your system !!! Pump it up to somewhere around 1 Gig then you'll be good to go

Don't be unaware of the regular scans for malware and spyware etc---do disk clean up and defrag--all that helps for alot more than the speed thing----but the slow thing centers around RAM

You should have read all hte newss releases by now, about Microsoft.com, Hotmail.com, MSN.com, and all servers, all gaming development and systems testing and development labs and teams on the Redmond campus running on 45,000+ Linux computers.

They have given up trying to get XP to run, and, just as with Win95, Win98, WinME, W2K, NT, etc. Microsoft has moved on, leaving you in the dust.

If you want to see your computer run 50X faster, virus proof, cracker free, do what Microsoft did, switch to Linux!

Abandon, like Microsoft has, all the anti-spyware, anti-malware, crap cleaners, virus checkers, etc...

You should run a checklist,

1) Scan your computer for virus and spyware:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

2) Do a full diagnostic test on your computer and see what
comes up:

3) Are you running programs that are starving your system of resources and slowing it to a crawl?

4) Has your computer had a decent defrag lately?
